Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons: Potential Computer Mouse Functionality?

Emerging circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer a novel computer mouse-like mode. While the widespread adoption of this feature by game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative controller experimentation.

The evidence originates from Famiboards user LiC, who previously analyzed Vietnamese customs data linked to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.

In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: shipping manifests referencing polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape, described as "mouse soles," intended for "game console handles." This terminology, typically used for the bottom of computer mice, strongly suggests potential mouse functionality for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons.

Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were identified. These numbers haven't been found in public component databases, implying they represent unreleased products. The listed size (90 x 90mm) suggests the tape could cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, potentially requiring trimming during assembly.

Not a First for Handhelds

While unconventional, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already incorporates this feature with its right controller, transformable into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic housing to facilitate smooth surface movement.

The Legion GO also features magnetic controller rails—a feature rumored for the Switch 2. These similarities offer a potential preview of Nintendo's hybrid console design.
