The Last of Us: No More Sequels?

Naughty Dog's Official Stance

The Last of Us Part 3 Isn't Coming, Claims Naughty Dog President

According to Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann, in a March 5, 2025 interview with Variety, don't expect another Last of Us sequel. His statement, "I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it," casts doubt on the future of the franchise in gaming. This comes as Naughty Dog shifts its focus towards expanding the Last of Us TV series.

Druckmann previously elaborated on his approach to sequels in a DICE Summit 2025 interview with IGN, stating he avoids preemptively planning sequels. He prefers to focus on the current project, considering the possibility of it being the last installment. This approach suggests that any future Last of Us ideas are unlikely. The Last of Us Part II already offered a somewhat conclusive narrative, further supporting this possibility. Fans can still anticipate the upcoming Season 2 of the Last of Us TV series, premiering April 13, 2025.

A New IP on the Horizon

While the future of The Last of Us game series remains uncertain, Naughty Dog is actively developing a new IP. Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, announced at The Game Awards 2024 for PlayStation 5, is a sci-fi title that has been in development since 2020. The teaser trailer hints at a unique and ambitious narrative. Further details remain scarce.

The Cancellation of The Last of Us Online

The Last of Us Part 3 Isn't Coming, Claims Naughty Dog President

The cancellation of The Last of Us Online paved the way for Intergalactic. Former Sony Interactive Entertainment President Shuhei Yoshida, in a February 19, 2025 interview on the Sacred Symbols+ podcast, revealed that Bungie's insights into the complexities of maintaining live-service games influenced this decision. Naughty Dog realized the commitment required for a live-service title would significantly hinder the development of Intergalactic. Yoshida highlighted that while Naughty Dog initially envisioned The Last of Us Online, they lacked the foresight to fully grasp the long-term commitment involved.

Druckmann's statements, coupled with the cancellation of The Last of Us Online, strongly suggest Naughty Dog is currently finished with the Last of Us video game franchise. However, fans can look forward to The Last of Us Part II Remastered, launching April 3, 2025, for PC. For the latest updates on The Last of Us Part II Remastered, check out our related article!
