Marvel Snap has returned and developers wish to switch publishers
The temporary shutdown of TikTok in the US on January 19th unexpectedly impacted Marvel Snap, the popular card game published by Nuverse (a ByteDance subsidiary). This disruption, lasting approximately 24 hours, resulted in the game becoming temporarily inaccessible. While Marvel Snap is now back online, full functionality remains in progress, with in-app purchases currently unavailable.
This incident, stemming from the ongoing political scrutiny surrounding TikTok's US operations, has prompted Second Dinner Studios to explore alternative publishing options and internalize certain services. TikTok's 90-day extension to sell a 50% stake to a US entity introduces significant risk of future disruptions for the game. Failure to reach an agreement could lead to renewed blockades.
Second Dinner has pledged further updates. While many users reported authorization problems, Steam users experienced less disruption. The developers expressed surprise at the event and are actively working to restore full service, stating on Platform X: “Marvel Snap is here to stay. We're working hard to restore the game as quickly as possible, and we'll keep players informed of our progress.”
The lack of prior warning caused significant frustration, particularly for players who continued making in-game purchases unaware of the impending lockout.
