A Marvel Rivals Player Created a Playable Doctor Octopus Concept and Fans Love It

NetEase Games' commitment to releasing a new Marvel Rivals hero every half-season hasn't stopped a talented player from creating their own playable Doctor Octopus.

Reddit user WickedCube recently shared a 30-second gameplay video showcasing a surprisingly polished Doctor Octopus concept for the game. The footage, seemingly from a testing environment, features a pre-Hulk Bruce Banner. The eight-armed Doctor Octopus design is clearly inspired by the classic Spider-Man villain, demonstrating well-considered mechanics.

The video highlights Doc Ock's ability to use his arms to magnetize himself to structures, essentially enabling flight within the game's destructible environments. His abilities include "Havoc Claw" (melee) and "Wrecking Grip" (ranged). The video has garnered significant attention, exceeding 16,000 upvotes.

WickedCube explained their inspiration, stating that Doc Ock's tentacles present a unique challenge for game development, and that a fully realized, playable 3D version hasn't been achieved before. A recent PSN outage and inspiring fan art provided the impetus for the project.

WickedCube, an indie game developer with experience at Keen Software House, is currently seeking contract work. They created the Doc Ock model in Unity, overcoming several technical hurdles. The positive community response has prompted them to share their process through a future YouTube tutorial series and open-source the code on GitHub, with playable versions available on Itch.io.

NetEase Games will release two new official characters, Human Torch and The Thing, this Friday, following the recent addition of Mister Fantastic and Invisible Woman. While the studio's progress is impressive, the vast potential of Marvel's universe continues to inspire fan creations.

WickedCube's project stemmed from the community's desire for more Vanguard characters. While there's no official word on Doc Ock's inclusion, WickedCube is already developing concepts for Nightcrawler and Professor Xavier. They praised NetEase's game design and the impressive pace of new character releases.

Marvel Rivals' Season 1 mid-season update arrives tomorrow, February 21st, including the new characters, balance adjustments, and gameplay refinements. Recent news includes layoffs at NetEase's Seattle branch and the studio's response to hero leak rumors.
