Marvel Comics to Relaunch Captain America With Batman Writer Chip Zdarsky
Marvel Comics is set to relaunch its monthly Captain America series with a fresh creative team and a captivating new storyline. This exciting reboot will delve into Steve Rogers' earliest days after his revival from suspended animation, offering a unique perspective on the iconic hero. A highlight? The series will chronicle Captain America's very first encounter with Doctor Doom!
The creative powerhouse behind this relaunch includes writer Chip Zdarsky (Batman, Daredevil) and artist Valerio Schiti (G.O.D.S., The Avengers), with colors by Frank D'Armata. This talented trio previously collaborated on 2017's Marvel 2-in-One, promising a seamless blend of storytelling and artistic brilliance.

The story begins shortly after Steve Rogers' rediscovery and thawing in the modern Marvel Universe. His first mission after rejoining the U.S. Army? A thrilling collaboration with the Howling Commandos to infiltrate Latveria, recently seized by a young, ambitious Doctor Doom. While the series will eventually transition to the present-day Marvel setting, the events of this initial arc will leave a lasting impact on Zdarsky and Schiti's overarching narrative.
"I’ve been a massive Captain America fan for decades," Zdarsky shared. "Getting to write the actual Captain America title feels like a dream! We’re exploring Cap’s early days in the modern era with a twist that I think is going to really surprise readers! I’m excited to get this out there, especially with Valerio and Frank’s amazing art!"
He continued, "I’ve approached this title like my Daredevil run, really trying to get in Cap’s head with a grounded, human look at who he is in this new world. Steve Rogers is the best of us, and I want that to come through on every page."
Schiti added, "Captain America is one of my all-time favorites. I'm reuniting with Chip Zdarsky and Frank D'Armata after the amazing experience of Marvel 2-In-One, and I'm working on a story that strikes the perfect balance between heart, action, and entertainment! But what's most exciting is that I found myself thinking more and more about Steve Rogers, instead of just Captain America."
"Chip's script is so clever and compelling that I’m sure readers will be drawn into Steve's heart and soul," Schiti explained. "He’s a man who became the living embodiment of truth, justice, and freedom. He fought a war against Nazism, ‘died’ in that war, and came back to life to do his duty and fight again. That’s a lot of pressure, and if you do the math, he’s only in his late twenties in the era we’re exploring!"
Captain America #1 will be released on July 2, 2025.
