Marvel vs Capcom 2 Original Characters May Show Up in Capcom Fighting Games
Capcom Producer Hints at Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Character Revival
Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto has fueled speculation about the return of beloved original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Speaking at EVO 2024, Matsumoto stated that the possibility of these characters appearing in a future game is "always there." This renewed hope follows the upcoming release of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, a remastered collection featuring six classic titles, including Marvel vs. Capcom 2.
The three original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2 – Amingo, Ruby Heart, and SonSon – have been largely absent from recent installments. Matsumoto believes the collection's release will reintroduce these characters to a wider audience, potentially sparking enough interest for their inclusion in future titles, possibly even outside the Versus series, such as Street Fighter 6. He highlighted the opportunity to expand Capcom's creative pool and content library.
Matsumoto also revealed that the Fighting Collection has been in the works for several years, requiring extensive collaboration with Marvel. He expressed Capcom's desire to create a new Versus title and re-release other legacy fighting games on modern platforms with updated features like rollback netcode. However, he acknowledged that such projects require time, collaboration with external partners, and depend on fan interest.
The success of the Fighting Collection is seen as a crucial step in gauging fan demand and paving the way for future projects. Matsumoto emphasized the company's commitment to bringing classic titles to a new generation of players, while acknowledging the challenges involved in these endeavors.
