Hollow Knight: Silksong Dev Fuels Nintendo Switch 2 Direct Fever With a Picture of a Chocolate Cake

Six years. That's how long fans have waited for Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 Metroidvania masterpiece. Through countless game showcases and even a seemingly confirmed pre-June 2023 release (courtesy of Microsoft), Silksong remained elusive. The Game Awards came and went without a peep. But could the recently announced Nintendo Switch 2 Direct finally be the moment?

The Hollow Knight subreddit believes so, and it all started with a cake.

On January 15th, Team Cherry co-director William Pellen updated his Twitter/X profile picture to a chocolate cake, accompanied by the cryptic tweet: “something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow.”

With rumors swirling about a January 16th Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, the timing was uncanny. Nintendo indeed unveiled the Switch 2 that day, leaving many questions unanswered about the new console. Did Pellen’s tweet hint at this reveal? And if so, why?

This sparked a frenzy within the Hollow Knight community. Fans reverse-image-searched the cake, tracing it back to a Brooklyn Blackout Cake recipe on Bon Appétit, published on April 2nd, 2024.

The significance? Nintendo confirmed the Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 for Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025. Fans believe Pellen orchestrated an alternate reality game (ARG) with the cake tweet, teasing Silksong's announcement.

The speculation didn't stop there. Fans are dissecting Pellen's new X/Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr, with one compelling theory suggesting the "wr" could be the start of a word related to a Silksong NPC, the Druid of the Moss Temple. The 15-character handle length also aligns with the character limit on Twitter.

Adding to the mystery, Pellen adopted the new name "little bomey," a possible reference (with altered spelling) to a Southern Australian wine, reflecting Team Cherry's location.

It's crucial to remember that Hollow Knight: Silksong was initially announced for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch. But six years later, has Nintendo secured Silksong as a Switch 2 launch title, perhaps even a timed exclusive? Or is this all just fervent speculation from eager fans?

We'll know in a few months. Until then, let's revisit the announcements from Nintendo's Switch 2 reveal.
