HBO Inks Deal With Lithgow for Dumbledore Role
HBO is reportedly in advanced negotiations with acclaimed actor John Lithgow, known for his role as Lord Farquaad in Shrek, to portray the iconic Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in their upcoming Harry Potter series. While HBO remains tight-lipped, Variety sources suggest a deal is imminent. This follows November reports naming Mark Rylance as the frontrunner for the role.
"We understand the significant interest surrounding this project and the resulting speculation," an HBO spokesperson stated. "Details will be confirmed only upon finalization of agreements."
Lithgow's extensive filmography includes memorable performances in The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, Footloose, Dexter, and The Crown.
The series will prioritize British actors, mirroring the films. This aligns with J.K. Rowling's reported involvement in the casting process.
Announced in April 2023, the Harry Potter adaptation promises a faithful, more in-depth exploration of the novels compared to the film series. Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, known for their work on Succession and Game of Thrones respectively, will serve as executive producers and directors.
