Keep Your Guard Up
Xu Wu is an incredibly agile boss in Monster Hunter Wilds. Its unpredictable movements, compounded by its unusual shape, can be particularly frustrating. Similar to Nu Udra, Xu Wu's black skin makes it challenging to discern its front from its back. Additionally, you'll need to contend with its multiple arms and its ability to slip into walls, disappearing momentarily. Be vigilant, as it may reemerge from the ceiling, aiming to drop onto you. This tactic is exclusive to its nest, so exercise extra caution when battling there.
Use Ice Attacks
Xu Wu is particularly vulnerable to Ice in Monster Hunter Wilds. Consider using Ice ammo if you're ranged, or equip melee gear capable of dealing elemental damage. Enhancing your equipment with a Frost Jewel decoration to gain the Ice Attack skill is advisable. Carrying a Frost Pod can also prove beneficial, allowing you to inflict minor Ice damage.
Avoid the Grab Attack
Xu Wu employs tentacles and dives to attack, but its grab attack is especially dangerous. If caught, you'll be unable to use your standard weapons, but you have a brief two-second window to escape. Utilize your slinger to break free, with Frost Pods proving particularly effective against this monster.
Attack Xu Wu’s Mouth
The mouth of Xu Wu is its most vulnerable point, though it's hidden beneath its body. You'll typically only see it when the monster lunges at you. A well-timed, powerful strike during this moment can cause substantial damage and potentially break its mouth, rewarding you with Xu Wu's fang. If the mouth is out of reach, target the head, which has a 4-star weakness to blunt and cut damage and a 3-star weakness to ammo damage.
Use Poison
Xu Wu exhibits a 3-star weakness to Poison, making this status ailment particularly effective. A bow equipped with Poison Coating is ideal for applying this effect. While other status ailments can be useful, steer clear of Sleep, as it's less effective against this monster.

Once Xu Wu's health drops to 20 percent, you can attempt to capture it. Use a Pitfall Trap or a Shock Trap for this purpose. Baiting the trap with meat or using yourself as bait can lure Xu Wu in. Quickly follow up with a tranquilizer shot to prevent the monster from escaping; you have only a few seconds to act before it breaks free.
