Despite claims that Black Myth: Wukong's success is mainly driven by China's massive player base, new comments from Game Science co-founder and art director Yang Qi suggest a different story. Speaking at the West Lake Art Forum at the China Academy of Art, Yang shared that 30% of players are from outside China—a number that reportedly took the development team by surprise. The action RPG launched in 2024 with strong sales and high ratings on Steam and Metacritic, and also received the Players’ Voice Award at The Game Awards, confirming its status as a standout title regardless of origin.

Black Myth: Wukong received a major update that introduces two new endgame modes—Return of Rivals and Gauntlet of Legends—unlocked after completing the main story. These modes let players face previously defeated bosses again, some with new attacks and configurable difficulty. During the same weekend, it was reported that a co-publisher of Black Myth: Wukong sent a list of guidelines to streamers and reviewers restricting discussion on topics including "violence, nudity, feminist propaganda, fetishization," and other areas that might spark "negative discourse."
The document drew mixed reactions online. One X user wrote, “It is WILD to me that this actually made it out the door… creators casually signing this and not speaking up is just as wild.” Others felt the restrictions were reasonable.
