Guerrilla Games' Horizon Multiplayer: Aiming High or Playing it Safe?

Guerrilla Games' upcoming Horizon multiplayer game may be poised for significant success, judging by recent developments. A new job listing reveals the studio is building live-service systems capable of handling over one million concurrent players. This suggests either incredibly high expectations for player interest or a proactive approach to avoid launch-day server issues like those experienced by Helldivers 2.

Since Horizon Forbidden West's release in 2022 and its Burning Shores DLC, Guerrilla has remained relatively quiet aside from collaborations on projects like Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered and LEGO Horizon Adventures. However, evidence pointing towards a Horizon multiplayer game has been accumulating for years, with job listings dating back to 2018 hinting at its existence. In 2025, its development is practically confirmed.

While the official announcement remains pending, a recent job posting for a Senior Platform Engineer strongly suggests Guerrilla anticipates a massive player base. The requirement for "proven experience building and operating multi-service, 1M+ user globally distributed systems" indicates a robust infrastructure designed to support over one million players.

Alternatively, this ambitious infrastructure could be a preventative measure. Helldivers 2's initial launch suffered from severe server overload due to unexpected popularity, impacting both new and existing players. Guerrilla likely aims to avoid a similar situation, regardless of the Horizon multiplayer game's ultimate success.

Given the game's years-long development and the absence of reported setbacks, a 2025 release seems plausible. A previous Guerrilla job listing hinted at a new Horizon game launch within the year, and considering a new mainline entry is still some time away, this strongly suggests the multiplayer project.
