George R.R. Martin Praises 'Game of Thrones' Adaptation as Faithful
George R.R. Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire, has praised the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, calling it "as faithful an adaptation as a reasonable man could hope for."
In a recent blog post, Martin revealed that HBO has completed filming for the six-episode series, slated for release later this year, possibly in the fall. Unlike his previous experience with House of the Dragon, Martin expressed enthusiastic support for this project.
"I've seen all six episodes (the last two in rough cuts), and I loved them," he wrote. "Dunk and Egg have always been favorites of mine, and the casting is superb. The entire cast is terrific. You'll especially love the Laughing Storm and Tanselle Too-Tall."
The series adapts The Hedge Knight, the first Dunk and Egg novella. Martin emphasized its faithfulness to the source material, while acknowledging its distinct tone. "It features a thrilling fight scene, but unlike other Game of Thrones installments, it lacks dragons, large-scale battles, and White Walkers. It's a character-driven story focusing on duty, honor, and chivalry."
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and Dexter Sol Ansell as Prince Aegon Targaryen (Egg). While the premiere is still some months off, HBO has already released promotional images and a short teaser trailer.
Martin concluded his post with a lighthearted mention of his long-awaited novel, The Winds of Winter, and his future plans for the Dunk and Egg stories: "Next up is 'The Sworn Sword,' the second Dunk & Egg tale. And after The Winds of Winter, I'll tackle 'The Village Hero' and the rest. Don't worry, you'll all remind me!"
