Fallout Franchise Director Eyes Future Series Entry
Fallout: New Vegas director Josh Sawyer, along with other key Fallout developers, have expressed enthusiasm for a new installment in the series. However, their participation hinges on a crucial condition: creative freedom.
New Fallout Game? It Depends on Innovation
Sawyer, in a YouTube Q&A, clearly stated his willingness to helm another Fallout title, but only if he's allowed significant creative leeway. He emphasized the importance of avoiding restrictive constraints, stating that a project's appeal is directly tied to the exploration of new ideas and approaches. Without the freedom to innovate, the project loses its allure.
This sentiment is echoed by other developers. Last year, Fallout co-creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky expressed interest in a Fallout: New Vegas remaster, but similarly stressed the necessity for creative novelty. Cain highlighted that past projects' appeal stemmed from the opportunity to explore uncharted territory within the RPG genre. Simply rehashing existing formulas wouldn't entice him.
Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart also voiced his desire to work on another Fallout game, given the opportunity. However, as of January 2023, he confirmed that no such project was underway, citing Obsidian's current commitments to Avowed, Grounded, and Outer Worlds 2. While he expressed a strong personal interest in returning to the Fallout universe before retirement, the timing remains uncertain. The future of a new Fallout game, therefore, rests not only on developer interest but also on the willingness of the stakeholders to embrace innovation and grant creative autonomy to the team.
