New Details on Blades of Fire from Early Players
Become Aran de Lir, a blacksmith and warrior whose life takes a tragic turn, thrusting him into a quest of epic proportions. He discovers a magical hammer, granting him access to the Forge of the Gods, where he’ll craft unique weapons to combat Queen Nereia’s formidable army. Prepare for a 60–70 hour adventure.
Journey through a breathtaking yet brutal fantasy world teeming with magical creatures—enchanted forests and blooming fields are home to trolls and elementals. The game’s distinctive visual style, reminiscent of Blizzard’s work, features exaggerated proportions: massive limbs, imposing buildings, and a monumental environment that creates a sense of awe. Encounter unique enemy designs, including stocky soldiers reminiscent of Gears of War’s Locust, adding a distinct flavor to the world.
Blades of Fire offers an unparalleled weapon crafting system and a unique combat mechanic, setting it apart from typical action games:
Forge your destiny by selecting a basic weapon template, then meticulously customize its size, shape, material, and other parameters, each impacting its performance. The process culminates in a skill-based mini-game where precise hammer strikes determine the weapon’s quality and durability. For convenience, instantly recreate previously forged weapons. Develop a strong bond with your creations; the developers encourage players to use the same weapons throughout their journey. Death means leaving your weapon behind, retrievable upon returning to the location. Carry up to four weapon types, switching seamlessly in combat. Each weapon boasts unique stances—slash, thrust, and more. Forget scavenging; you’ll craft every weapon. Seven weapon types await, from halberds to dual axes.
Master a directional combat system. Strike at the face, torso, left, or right, exploiting enemy weaknesses. Strategic combat extends to bosses; some, like trolls, possess a secondary health bar, vulnerable only after severing a limb—cut off an arm wielding a club, or even destroy their face for a temporary blinding effect. Stamina, vital for attacks and dodges, doesn't regenerate automatically; hold the block button to replenish it.
Reviewers acknowledge potential shortcomings—a perceived lack of content, uneven difficulty, and a forging mechanic that may require some adjustment. However, the unique setting and combat system effectively compensate for these aspects.
Blades of Fire launches May 22, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Epic Games Store).
