Classic DOOM and DOOM 2 Updated

Some fans are diving back into the classic DOOM and DOOM 2 games while eagerly awaiting the release of DOOM: The Dark Ages. In the meantime, the development team has returned to active work, recently rolling out a significant update for the DOOM + DOOM 2 compilation.

This update brings a host of technical improvements and quality-of-life enhancements. Multiplayer mod support has been expanded—mods created using Vanilla DOOM, DeHackEd, MBF21, or BOOM are now compatible. A major addition for co-op players is the ability for all team members to pick up items, improving gameplay flow. The update also introduces an observer mode for players who are down and waiting to be revived, ensuring they stay engaged during matches. The multiplayer network code has been optimized for smoother performance, and the mod loader now supports more than the first 100+ subscribed mods, allowing for greater customization.

Looking ahead to DOOM: The Dark Ages, players will have the option to adjust demon aggression directly in the settings. This feature is part of a broader effort to make the game as accessible as possible. The title will offer deeper customization than any previous id Software release. Executive producer Marty Stratton emphasized that the team is focused on inclusivity, enabling players to tailor key gameplay elements such as enemy damage, difficulty, projectile speed, player damage intake, game tempo, aggression levels, and parry timing.

Stratton also confirmed that DOOM: The Dark Ages is designed to be accessible to newcomers—no prior knowledge of DOOM: Eternal or the broader DOOM lore is required to follow the story. This standalone narrative approach ensures both longtime fans and new players can fully enjoy the experience.
