Does Civilization 7 Have Cross-Play and Cross-Progression (Civ 7)?
Civilization VII: A Deep Dive into Cross-Play and Cross-Progression
Sid Meier's Civilization VII marks a new era for the iconic turn-based strategy series, launching across major gaming platforms. This article clarifies the game's cross-play and cross-progression capabilities.
Cross-Play:
Civilization VII supports cross-play, but with limitations. Players require an active 2K account linked to their chosen platforms. While cross-play generally functions seamlessly across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, macOS, and Linux, offering standard map sizes and player counts, incompatibility arises when Nintendo Switch players participate.
The Switch version has limitations on map size (unable to support standard or larger maps) and player counts (up to four players in Antiquity and Exploration Ages, six in the Modern Age). Therefore, if a Switch player joins a cross-play match, these restrictions apply to all participants. While the Switch version is playable, its limitations should be considered, especially in online multiplayer.
Cross-Progression:
Unlike the complexities of cross-play, Civilization VII's cross-progression is straightforward, provided players have an active 2K account. Progress is tracked across all linked platforms, preventing the need to restart on each console or PC. This feature, a response to modern gaming habits, is available at launch, unlike in Civilization VI, where it was a post-release addition. Whether playing on a Steam Deck, Switch, PC, or console, your progress remains consistent.
Civilization VII launches February 11th.
