Eli Roth's highly anticipated Borderlands movie is poised for release, but early critical response paints a bleak picture. Discover what critics are saying and what moviegoers can expect.
Borderlands: A Critical Miss?
Stellar Cast Can't Save a Subpar Film
Early reviews for the Borderlands film adaptation are overwhelmingly negative. Critics, following early screenings, have voiced their disappointment across social media platforms. Common criticisms include weak humor, unconvincing CGI, and a lackluster script.
Edgar Ortega of Loud and Clear Reviews tweeted, "Borderlands feels like a clueless executive's idea of 'cool.' The humor falls flat, and it's not even 'so bad it's good,' just a mess."
Darren Movie Reviews from Movie Scene Canada called it "a baffling adaptation," praising the potential world-building but faulting a rushed and dull screenplay, noting impressive set design undermined by poor CGI.
Despite the overwhelmingly negative reception, some critics found glimmers of hope. Film critic Kurt Morrison noted Blanchett and Hart's performances, stating they "save it from being a complete trainwreck," while acknowledging its unlikely audience appeal. The Hollywood Handle offered a more positive, albeit qualified, assessment: "Borderlands is a fun PG-13 action movie that relies heavily on Cate Blanchett's star power – and she delivers."
Initially announced in 2020 after a period of inactivity, the Borderlands movie boasts a star-studded cast, despite initial fan skepticism.
The film centers on Cate Blanchett's Lilith as she returns to Pandora to find Atlas's missing daughter (Edgar Ramirez). She teams up with a diverse crew: Kevin Hart as Roland, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, and Jack Black as Claptrap. As major publications release their full reviews in the coming days, audiences will soon judge for themselves when Borderlands hits theaters August 9th. Meanwhile, Gearbox has hinted at a new Borderlands game.
