Blizzard Welcomes Marvel Rivals, Acknowledges Unique Competition in Overwatch 2
From the moment Marvel Rivals was unveiled, comparisons to Overwatch were inevitable. At first glance, Marvel Rivals bears a striking resemblance to Blizzard’s game. Both utilize a cast of iconic characters—Marvel Rivals with its heroes and villains, and Overwatch with its diverse lineup of heroes. Both games are competitive multiplayer hero shooters, sharing similar mechanics and gameplay systems. Moreover, both Marvel Rivals and Overwatch 2 are free-to-play, monetized through live service models, and rely on the introduction of new characters to keep the gameplay experience fresh and engaging.
Since its launch in December, Marvel Rivals has seen a surge in popularity, with speculation suggesting that this rise has come at the expense of Overwatch 2's player base. The prevailing narrative indicates that Blizzard's game is losing ground as NetEase's Marvel Rivals attracts an ever-growing audience.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller addressed the new competitive landscape that Blizzard faces with the emergence of Marvel Rivals. "We're obviously in a new competitive landscape that I think, for Overwatch, we've never really been in before, to this extent where there's another game that's so similar to the one that we've created," Keller remarked. Despite the potential threat, Keller described the situation as "exciting" and praised Marvel Rivals for taking Overwatch's established concepts in a "different direction."
Keller also admitted that Marvel Rivals' success has prompted a shift in Blizzard's approach to Overwatch 2, emphasizing that "this is no longer about playing it safe." In response, Blizzard has announced significant changes planned for Overwatch 2 in 2025. These updates will not only introduce new content as expected but will also bring about a major transformation in the core gameplay, including the introduction of hero perks and the reintroduction of loot boxes.
The gaming community will be watching closely to see if these changes can reignite interest in Overwatch 2. Now, nearly nine years after the original Overwatch debuted in 2016, and two-and-a-half years since the launch of Overwatch 2, the game's concurrent player numbers on Steam are at their lowest since its release on the platform in 2023, with a peak of 37,046 players over the last 24 hours. In contrast, Marvel Rivals remains a top 10 most-played game on Steam, boasting a concurrent player peak of 310,287 over the same period.
Overwatch 2 currently holds a 'mostly negative' user review rating on Steam. This sentiment was particularly evident in August 2023 when Overwatch 2 became the worst user-reviewed game on Steam ever, primarily due to backlash over its monetization strategy. Blizzard faced criticism for updating the premium Overwatch into a free-to-play sequel, making the original game unplayable in 2022. Additionally, Overwatch 2 has faced several controversies, including the cancellation of its much-anticipated PvE Hero mode, which many players believed justified the sequel's existence.
