"Top Gun: Maverick's Kosinski Directs Miami Vice Reboot"
Universal Pictures has reportedly tapped Joseph Kosinski to helm a new Miami Vice film, as revealed by The Hollywood Reporter.
Dan Gilroy, acclaimed writer-director of Nightcrawler, has been brought on board to pen the screenplay. He'll refine an initial draft by Eric Warren Singer, the Oscar-nominated scribe behind Top Gun: Maverick. Gilroy recently contributed multiple episodes to the Star Wars spinoff Andor, created by his brother Tony Gilroy.
Originally an NBC crime drama, Miami Vice revolutionized television during its 1984-1989 run. Conceived by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann, the iconic series starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs. Its groundbreaking style redefined visual aesthetics, musical scoring, and atmosphere in prime-time television.
The franchise previously transitioned to the big screen in 2006 with Mann directing Heat and Collateral alumni Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.
While specific details remain scarce, insider reports confirm this won't be Kosinski's immediate next project following his upcoming F1 film slated for June release.
The extended timeline should allow the TRON: Legacy director ample opportunity to secure the perfect Ferrari replica—a trademark element from the original series.
