Square Enix Cancels Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link
Square Enix has officially pulled the plug on the eagerly awaited mobile spin-off of their beloved ARPG franchise, Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link. Following several delays, including the much-anticipated Android closed beta test, the company has decided to halt development on Missing-Link to concentrate their efforts on the highly anticipated Kingdom Hearts IV.
Set in a previously unexplored chapter of the Kingdom Hearts saga, Missing-Link was designed to blend GPS technology with ARPG combat, allowing players to wield the iconic keyblades against the monstrous Heartless intent on world destruction. The integration of GPS was a key feature, enabling players to explore various global locations remotely. However, the mechanics of this feature remained somewhat mysterious, and this ambiguity may have contributed to the decision to cancel the project.
Be there or be square - Square Enix's decision to cancel their mobile projects has almost become a running joke. This trend might be due to the complexity and density of their game catalog, which, while critically acclaimed, can be overwhelming. While new mobile releases are generally well-received in Japan, capturing an international audience has proven challenging. This issue does not seem to have been a concern for Kingdom Hearts, suggesting that the core concept of Missing-Link was difficult to execute, leading Square Enix to redirect their focus to the next mainline entry in the series, Kingdom Hearts IV.
