Should You Kill Ygwulf or Let Him Live in Avowed? Answered
In Avowed's opening moments, the Envoy faces a tragic assassination. Solving this murder mystery reveals Ygwulf, the killer. The choice: mercy or vengeance. Should you kill Ygwulf?
Understanding Ygwulf's Motives
After investigating with Kai and Marius in Paradis, you'll uncover Ygwulf's identity as a Paradisan Rebel, fiercely opposing Aedyr's influence. As the Emperor's Envoy, the player is a prime target. Tracking Ygwulf to his underground hideout involves combat and platforming challenges. Optional documents reveal Ygwulf's initial belief in divine justification for his actions, followed by remorse. Regardless of finding these documents, his regret will be evident during your confrontation.
The Consequences of Sparing Ygwulf
Surrendering Ygwulf to the Steel Garrote Inquisitor is the least favorable outcome, resulting in a brutal death. This yields less reward than sparing him or killing him. Choosing mercy grants 625 Copper Skeyt and some Adra, but Ygwulf's demise is inevitable later in the game.
Why Killing Ygwulf is the Best Choice
Given his predetermined death, attacking Ygwulf offers the most advantages. The ensuing boss fight provides valuable combat practice. More importantly, defeating him yields superior loot: currency, Adra, and the unique Blackwing armor. Blackwing offers a significant +30% damage boost from stealth and a 25% movement speed increase while crouching.
Ygwulf's Lasting Impact (Spoiler Warning)
While encountered early, Ygwulf's fate subtly affects Avowed's ending. Post-game epilogues illustrate the consequences of your choices in Eora's Living Lands. Ygwulf's death, regardless of your actions, radicalizes the Paradisan Rebellion, ensuring their continued violent resistance even after the credits roll, hindering your efforts to bring peace to the Living Lands.
