GTA 6 Mapping Project Surges Forward with Trailer 2: 'Information Overload'
The long-running GTA 6 mapping project has shifted into high gear following the release of Trailer 2. Garza, a key member of the project and overseer of the GTA 6 Mapping Discord, shared with IGN that the new trailer "really changes everything for us for the rest of the year." With the Discord community now boasting 370 members and rapidly approaching 400, the team is diving deep into the wealth of new information provided by Trailer 2.
"It's an information overload - it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year," Garza emphasized. "We have so much new content to work on and we're really just getting started." The project, which kicked off after the significant September 2022 leaks, had been relying on those leaks and December 2023's Trailer 1 until now. The latest map version, released at the end of March by project lead DuPz0r, is already outdated due to the fresh insights from Trailer 2.
Rockstar not only confirmed plot details and introduced new characters but also released 70 brand new screenshots of GTA 6. They also provided information and visuals of various explorable locations in the state of Leonida, GTA 6's rendition of Florida. Confirmed locations include Vice City (GTA 6's version of Miami), the tropical Leonida Keys archipelago, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and the national landmark Mount Kalaga, situated near the state's northern border.
The volunteers are meticulously analyzing Trailer 2 to pinpoint the exact locations of everything shown, and are working to align images of fictional spaces with their real-world inspirations. Once complete, DuPz0r will release an updated map, which fans eagerly anticipate as their clearest preview of GTA 6's world ahead of its May 2026 release. Should Rockstar release more assets or gameplay footage in the meantime, the team is ready to refine their work further. Only upon GTA 6's launch will they be able to compare their fan-created map with the actual game to gauge their accuracy.

However, the project faces potential risks from Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two, which has previously intervened in similar projects. In March, a modder who recreated the GTA 6 map in GTA 5 halted their work after receiving a takedown notice from Take-Two. When asked last year about his concerns regarding potential action from Take-Two, Garza admitted to "some mild concern."
"This project has been going on for quite some time with no direct disruption to our community," Garza explained. "However, I always keep it into consideration if they intend on communicating with us in the future for any reason. We do not explicitly showcase leaked material in the map, so I do not believe they would take that down in particular. I believe they are aware that this project gathers popularity and interest in the game, since everyone wants to see how the world may look like. This can be one of the reasons why they haven’t done anything, since it’s not too negative. If I were ever in the situation of receiving a cease and desist though, then I would respectfully cease and desist. As we get closer to a precise map, it may be possible to receive that notice in the future."
