Pokemon GO Ending Support for Some Devices Soon
Pokemon GO to Drop Support for Older Devices in 2025
Upcoming updates to Pokemon GO will end support for certain older mobile devices, impacting players using 32-bit Android phones. These changes, slated for March and June 2025, mean affected players will need to upgrade their devices to continue playing.
The popular augmented reality game, launched in July 2016, boasts a significant player base. While its peak player count was reached years ago, millions still actively play. However, Niantic's optimization efforts for newer devices necessitate this change, removing support for older 32-bit Android models.
An official announcement on January 9th detailed the upcoming support termination. The first update in March will affect some Android devices downloaded from the Samsung Galaxy Store. The June update will specifically target 32-bit Android devices obtained via Google Play. While a complete list wasn't provided, several affected models were named, including older Samsung Galaxy and Note series, Sony Xperia Z2 and Z3, Motorola Moto G (1st gen), and various other models from LG, OnePlus, HTC, ZTE, and devices released before 2015. 64-bit Android devices and all iPhones remain unaffected.
Players facing this change are urged to securely save their login credentials. While account access will be restored after upgrading to a compatible device, they will be temporarily locked out, including any purchased Pokecoins.
Despite this inconvenience, 2025 promises exciting developments for the broader Pokemon franchise. The release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A is anticipated, alongside rumored remakes of Pokemon Black and White, and a potential new entry in the Let's Go series. A potential Pokemon Presents showcase on February 27th may offer further details regarding Pokemon GO's future.
